[ARCHIVED] MBTA Spring 2021 Service Changes

As part of its Forging Ahead initiative, the MBTA has announced temporary schedule changes that will go into effect in March and April of this year.

Beginning March 1st through early May 2021, bus shuttle service will replace all inbound and outbound trains between the Littleton/495 station and Boston, routing riders to the Alewife station for a connection with the Red Line. This service diversion is to accommodate the installation of Positive Train Control (PTC), which is a federally mandated anti-collision safety technology.

There will be sixteen shuttles in total, of which eight express shuttles directly from the South Acton station to Alewife will be offered. Bicycles are not permitted on the shuttle buses.

The MBTA also recently suspended weekend service on the Fitchburg Line and has indicated the service will not be replaced with this new shuttle service during the diversion period.

There will be additional modifications to the bus and subway networks, beginning March 14th and the Commuter Rail will undergo additional scheduling changes starting April 5th.

Ahead of these changes, the MBTA will host two virtual public meetings on February 17th and February 24th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. These meetings will provide an opportunity for riders to learn more about the changes, ask questions, and provide input on future service changes.
